Undressing the term “Quack” & the rise of Natural Healthcare

Quack

The origins of the term “Quack” & the Rise of Natural Healthcare

The term “quack” has its origins in the Dutch word “quacksalver,” which referred to individuals who loudly promoted their remedies, often while selling salves or other treatments in public markets. Over time, the term evolved to describe someone who falsely claims medical expertise or promotes unproven treatments.

The case of Wilk v. AMA, decided in 1987, was a turning point in the history of alternative medicine. This lawsuit exposed the American Medical Association’s deliberate efforts to discredit chiropractors, labeling them as “unscientific” and actively discouraging collaboration between chiropractors and medical doctors. The court ultimately ruled that the AMA had violated antitrust laws, confirming that its campaign was intended to destroy chiropractic care as a profession. This ruling not only validated chiropractic practice but also brought attention to the systemic bias and control exerted by mainstream medical organizations.

Since that time, natural health has experienced exponential growth in public interest. The Wilk case marked a shift, encouraging many to question the motives of entrenched medical systems and to explore alternative approaches to health care.

This increased interest reflects a broader demand for preventative care, holistic practices, and personal empowerment in health management.

The Rise Of Natural Medicine and successful Health Results Fuelled the Rise of  Delegitimization by opposers concerned about monetary gains.

The historical use of terms like “quack” “fish slappers” “witchcraft” to delegitimize alternative practitioners highlights the opposition natural health has faced. However, as more people experience the benefits of these approaches, public trust in natural medicine has grown.

Platforms such as Quackwatch, and organisations led by the “Friends” of science” in medicine, (have been known to train medical students in Australian universities to troll social media and bully and intimidate natural health care professionals) once influential in spreading disinformation and pressuring government in removing natural healthcare rebates in Australia, now hold little relevance as the credibility of natural health continues to rise.
